Losing Ground, The Banff Centre

Choreography by Sabrina Matthews, 2006

This work remains my most evocative experience in design. I was asked to provide an element of frailty, softness and movement which would contrast with the austere, modern set design. The final blouse design was made of silk organza, the natural gum wash away, leaving a fabric with a unique loft, body and a feminine softness that was breath taking to watch float across the stage. The range of motion was sustained through open seams under the arm. The men’s pant fabric had a cut and a drape that while body forming, allowed a similar flow in movement. The production was well received and produced again by Alberta Ballet.
